The Lakes region was once a major iron ore producing area. Several iron furnaces still remain from that era – The Great Western Furnace being one.

In operation during the early 19th century, most furnaces ground to a halt once the Civil War began and failed to re-start after the North prevailed, mainly due to a depletion of the natural resources in the area.

Located directly on the Trace road, the great western furnace has been well preserved and is a worthwhile attraction to visit during your stay within the Lakes region!
